Messaging

How about building a new application involving text, audio and video messaging capabilities that really gets customers excited?

SMS

SMS can be a great option to integrate into your application.  Binary SMS can be used as your network communication or data transfer if you don't have a huge amount of data.

On the network, T-Mobile offers the following SMS capabilities you can build from:

  • Send and receive messages to and from any 10-digit wireless phone number.
  • Send and receive messages from an e-mail address—all T-Mobile subscribers have email addresses
  • Receive info alerts like horoscopes, sports scores, jokes, and more.

MMS

MMS is a 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Forum Standard that lets users of MMS-supportive devices send and receive messages with text, pictures, and sounds.  MMS uses General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) as a bearer and a WAP 1.2.1 or later browser to handle the service at the terminal side. The service has the following main functionality:

  • Send/receive multimedia messages to/from MMS capable devices (mobile to mobile)
  • Send/receive MMS messages to/from e-mail clients (mobile to/from e-mail)

Short Codes

Short codes are short phone numbers which can be used to address SMS and MMS messages from mobile devices. Lease a 5-digit common short code (CSC) to get started.  Registering and leasing a CSC costs $1,000 per month for a custom or "Select CSC" and $500 per month for a "Random CSC."

WAP Push

Use the WAP Push protocol to send messages that include a link for users to accept and launch a browser session to the URL destination. This protocol is used to deliver rich content like ringtones, wallpapers and games. Learn more about WAP push and other WAP capabilities via the Open Mobile Alliance.
