Overview of Opportunities With T-Mobile

If you’re reading this, it means that you are interested in getting your application promoted with T-Mobile and you want to know a little more about the process.

The first thing to know about being promoted with us is to simply register and sign the click- through promotional agreement, and then Pitch Your App. That’s the first and most crucial step.

It’s possible that you heard about us through another developer, or we actually sent you there because you got an email saying “T-Mobile is interested in promoting your application.” It’s not spam, if we sent you an email there is a specific opportunity that we have identified and you fit very nicely. However, if you don’t do the critical first steps (register and Pitch us) it’s just that; an opportunity and as such it can be missed.

What’s going on you ask? We have a lot of opportunities, and as the application market continues to grow we can’t possibly look at every application that gets posted. Plus we also know there are lots of apps out there worthy of promotion but can get a little overshadowed.

What we are looking for

T-Mobile is very focused on the family, so any applications with a family focus or emphasis is important. We want applications that will not only help the family stay connected but also help manage the household, coordinate busy schedules and provide a few moments of fun if there is any downtime! Other things we’re looking for:

  • Apps that are just about to launch or just launched
  • Unique and/or innovative applications
  • An app that got its fame from another application store and has been ported to one we support. These are very popular and customers ask for these all the time.
  • An app that is unique ONLY to an application store that we support
  • Simple and elegant but HIGHLY usable and rated very high in rankings (yeah, we know you all like to think this applies to you)

What to avoid

There is of course the obvious; porn, nudity, offensive language, blood, violence and gore. If it’s something that you wouldn’t show a 12 year old or your grandma then there’s probably a good chance that it won’t pass. We understand that there are lots of apps out there that are great but we have a commitment to our customers and while ultimately they can find those apps, we don’t want to facilitate them. However, if you’re not sure, just ask us. We’re not keeping any secrets as to why we can’t use your app for promotion and we want to be fair so we’ll let you know. Please read the T-Mobile Advertising Blacklist Guidelines for a reference and guide as to some things we likely wouldn’t go for.

Licensing of brands within your app can be a deal breaker for us promoting. If you have a soundboard from a popular movie or character, we will likely not promote it unless you can prove all the licenses are in place. In other words we will ask you to forward. And the licensing needs to have unlimited transferable rights to a third party (T-Mobile USA in this case) otherwise we again are unable to use them.

Since we always like to use screenshots for our promotional opportunities, licensing issues can always be another key obstacle for us promoting your application. Because of many subtleties with promotional licensing rights we’ve created a document to help guide you in your application screenshot submissions. If you follow these closely, you’ll know what will be approved, what questions we’ll have for you and what we will not be able to use.
